Title I Supplemental Learning Program

What is Title I?

Title I is the nation's largest federal assistance program for schools. It was created in 1965 by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, and most recently reauthorized in 2001 by the No Child Left Behind Act. The goal of Title I is to help every child get a high-quality education. Funding is provided to the state and the state sends money to school districts based on the number of families below a set income level. The school districts identify eligible schools and distribute the Title I funds.
In Coventry, we have three elementary schools which receive some limited funding from Title I.  Blackrock School, Hopkins Hill School and Tiogue School use these funds to help support their Supplemental Learning Programs. Students most in need of help with reading and/or mathematics are selected for this program. Any student in need of extra instruction in these subjects is eligible to participate. Students do not have to meet income standards to qualify. The other elementary schools in Coventry have a comparable program which receives funding from a different source. Because Title I funds are used for this program, if your child is in the Supplemental Learning Program, he/she is a Title I student.
