What is Title I?
Title I is the
nation's largest federal assistance program for schools. It was
created in 1965 by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, and
most recently reauthorized in 2001 by the No Child Left Behind Act.
The goal of Title I is to help every child get a high-quality
education. Funding is provided to the state
and the state sends money to school districts based on the number
of families below a set income level. The school districts identify
eligible schools and distribute the Title I funds.
In Coventry, we have three elementary schools
which receive some limited funding from Title I. Blackrock
School, Hopkins Hill School and Tiogue School use these funds to
help support their
Supplemental Learning Programs. Students most in need of help
with reading and/or mathematics are selected for this program. Any student in need of
extra instruction in these subjects is eligible to
participate. Students do not have to meet income standards
to qualify. The other elementary
schools in Coventry have a comparable program which receives funding
from a different source. Because Title I funds
are used for this program, if your child is in
the Supplemental Learning Program, he/she is a Title I student.
Parent's Rights
As the parent of a child in the Title I Program, you
have certain rights.
•You have the right to review Coventry's policies on Parent
Involvement. The link on this page will take you to our District
policy.
•You have the right to know the qualifications of your child's
teachers and teaching assistants. We are pleased to inform you that
all of our teachers and assistants are highly qualified. If at any
point during the year one of our teachers is absent for an extended
period and we are unable to find a highly qualified replacement, we
will let you know.
•You have the right to know how your child does on State
Assessments. Copies of your child's scores will be sent to you by
the school.
•You have the right to request information from your child's teacher
about how he/she is doing in the Supplemental Reading Program. You
will also be notified if your child is being exited from the
Supplemental Reading Program because he/she has met their goals.
