The Reading Process

Before Reading -Connect with Text

Before reading, good readers...

  • Set a Purpose -What is your reason for reading?  Is it an assignment...for enjoyment...to gain information?

  • Activate Prior Knowledge - What do you already know about this topic?

  • Preview the Text -Look at the title, pictures, headings

  • Predict - After looking at the title, table of contents, etc., what do you think you'll learn?

  • Plan - What strategy will you use?  Will you use post-its...graphic organizer?

  During Reading -Read with Purpose

During reading, good readers...

  • THINK about the Text -What is happening? 

  • Use Strategies - Visualize, Question, Connect, Predict, Infer, Clarify

  • Be Active - Organize important points, take notes, use post-its or graphic organizer

  • Check Reading Rate - Are you too fast or slow?  Do you sound choppy or phrased?

 

After Reading -Stop and Reflect

After reading, good readers...

  • Recall -Think about what you just read... check your notes  (Try the Read, Cover, Retell)

  • Reread  - Reread some or all of the text.  Did you miss something important the first time?

  • Remember - Store what you just read/learned in your memory

  • Share - Were there some interesting parts?  Is there something you learned?
