The Robotics Club
Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School of Coventry

SCHEDULED ROBOTICS CLUB MEETINGS:  There will be a Robotics club meeting Monday, January 11 from 2:30 - 3:30.  This meeting is in preparation for anyone interested in participating in TSA (Technology Student Association Competition)  Specific challenges will be announced at the meeting.

Our Events:

First Lego League  Students prepare for this event in several ways.  First a research project is required, with an action plan.  Second students are given a Robotic Field set up with specific challenges to solve with their robot.  They must plan and design a robot to complete these challenges.  This competition is held at Roger Williams University, January 19.  Students are judged by teachers and engineers evaluating their overall robotic performance and robotic design, research project presentation, as well as teamwork.  This competition is a lot of fun, but also required a lot of work and dedication.

FIRST LEGO LEAGUE RESULTS:  CONGRATULATIONS!!!!  The students on the "Power Pros" placed 1st in the Creative Presentation category!  Overall the competition was a success!  Students excelled in the research and presentation and made significant improvements on the lego board.  Great Job guys!  Thanks to all the parents, families, and supporters who came out to cheer us on.

Technology Student Association:  This event is scheduled to take place on April 5th @ NEIT.  Students are given a list of activities that are available.  These activities range from Solid Works (3D drawing on the computer), mini robotic competitions, graphic design, and many more.  This competition is much more relaxed, however awards are given.

Robotics Park:  This event will take place on May 3rd @ Martin Middle School in East Providence.  Students prepare in a variety of ways for this event.  There is not a standard score sheet that students are held accountable for, however they are interviewed by adults, educators, and engineers and given feedback on their hard work.  Students choose a part of the overall theme or project that they are interested in and then from that create a display, chain reaction machine, parade float, etc.

URI Robotics Transportation Event:  This is an event typically held in May.  Sponsored by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation as well as the University of Rhode Island.  It takes place during a school day at URI.  Students are given a theme based on transportation and must complete a mini research / informational / poster board displaying their findings.  As well as a robot to compete on the transportation robotic table.  Students are evaluated on their poster board as well as their robotic performance on the lego table.  (we are only able to take 10 students max, as they follow the same rules that First Lego League uses)

Who am I?

My name is Ms. Horton, the Robotics teacher at Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School.  For the past three years I have been a Robotics teacher in Coventry Middle Schools, bringing my students to several Robotic competitions.  I look forward to bringing this excitement to the year ahead.

What is the Robotics Club?

The Robotics club is a hands-on, problem solving club.  Students are given a theme, or a problem and they are to work within their groups to produce a result, or solution.  These solutions are met by using technology, and robotic equipment.  Help can not always be given by me as their coach, I am mainly a guide or a facilitator.

Who can join?

All students at the Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School are welcome to join the after school Robotics Club.  The club will be structured and run by the set standards and expectations held during any regular school day.  We will be following a Behavior Rubric, and a Project Rubric format.

When does the Robotics Club meet

The Robotics club meets on Tuesdays after school from 2:30 3:30 in room 333.  Our first meeting will be September 18th

Any further questions please e-mail me at  or call the Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School, 1-401-822-9426.

If your son/daughter will be attending the Robotics club they must have the form below filled out and returned in order to attend.

I have seen the Behavior and Project Rubrics that display the expectations of students in the Robotics Club.  I understand that failure to comply with these expectations could result in my son / daughters permanent dismissal from Robotics Club.
