Our students are currently working on mapping skills. What I have done is integrate a Signature Series story, called Shoe Town with a unit in our Social Studies book. The students have determined which types of buildings are necessary for a town. Then they chose a building to create at home for our town. The "map" is a large white paper taped to our long blue table, where the children drew in a background of trees, streets, roads, etc. When the buildings come in, the chidlren may place them on the map along with their Shoe Town shoe and stuffed animal that lives in it. This is not only fun for the students but they are gaining an introduction to looking at a map.
